Climate Change Solutions
- Clearly articulating the scale and nature of the climate crisis, for public and private audiences.
- Identifying opportunities for individuals, groups and companies to implement climate-saving solutions.
- Creating a reservoir of hope by consistently focusing on solutions.
Irish American Climate Exchange
Kevin is director of the Irish American Climate Project. The Project will issue a report describing the ecological and cultural implications of climate change in Ireland. It will rely heavily on the work of leading climate scientists, but will also bring in the voices of artists, musicians, writers, farmers, anglers, innkeepers and others who can help audiences grasp the true impact and urgency of the climate crisis. The primary audience for this report will be the more than 40 million Americans who claim Irish ancestry. If these Irish-Americans fully understand the potentially significant impacts of climate change on Ireland, they may be more likely to push for climate solutions.
Climate Change & National Security
On behalf of a coalition of foundations, Kevin coordinated the National Security and Climate Change Project. The Project worked with eleven retired three- and four-star generals and admirals, and a leading defense research organization. It led to a ground-breaking report, issued in April 2007, that outlined the security implications of climate change. The report, widely covered by media around the world and the subject of multiple congressional hearings, has been praised for facilitating bipartisan discussions about America's response to climate change. The New York Times Magazine cited this work in its annual “Year in Ideas” issue, noting how swiftly the concept of “climate conflicts” was adopted in the wake of this report. Public Lands & Climate Change
On behalf of California State Parks, The Center for Environmental Law and Policy (at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law), and The Resources Legacy Fund, Kevin drafted a white paper to facilitate discussion at a symposium on climate change and public lands. The paper, and subsequent symposium, focused on adaptation needs that will face public land managers throughout the state under various climate change scenarios.
